Season the beef roast with pepper and sear in a hot skillet for a couple of minutes. NOTE: Readers have asked if it is important to sear the roast first before placing it in a slow cooker. It isn’t necessary, but if you have a couple of extra minutes, I think it adds a lot more flavor to the roast.

Turn the roast over after a couple of minutes. Sear the other side. Look at how brown and delicious that sear is, it really adds to the flavor.

Take out 8 peppers from the jar. Place them in the slow cooker. These peppers are not spicy, but they add a lot of flavors.

What is the difference between a crockpot and a slow cooker?

There is just a minor difference between the slow cooker and the crockpot. The pot of the slow cooker usually sits on a base that is the heating element on the bottom, while Crockpots have their pots inside of a container (or a crock) and gets heating from all sides. Therefore, slow cookers heat up slower than crockpots, with the heat level higher on the bottom of the pot.

What is a slow cooker and how does it work?

Slow cooking is very similar to a stovetop or a dutch oven. In a slow cooker, the heat begins at the base of the slow cooker and works its way up the sides, then into the food. The steam generated from the heat creates a vacuum seal with the lid. Low and consistent temperatures help to retain moisture during cooking. Do not open the lid until finished cooking.

Can you cook raw meat in a slow cooker?

Yes, raw beef can be cooked in a slow cooker. This slow cooker Mississippi Pot Roast has a step for browning the beef before it goes into the slow cooker. While this step isn’t necessary, caramelizing the meat creates richer, bolder flavors.

If I wanted to do potatoes and carrots in with this, thoughts? Maybe add a little broth to the pan after searing and just too the roast with that then add the veggies. Question is, at the beginning of the cook or half way through 🤔

Dear Mallory,

I have made other slow cooker recipes for beef stew and have added potatoes and carrots at the start of the recipe and it has turned out perfect for me. I have only made slow cooker mashed potatoes in a second crock pot along with this slow cooker Mississippi Pot Roast.

Hope this helps!

OMG, best Pot roast I ever had ! I added some sweet onion, red onion, jalapeno and cilantra that had had left over from Nachos a few days prior, also cut up 2 celery stalks. while cooking I also added little water, red wine and some beef brooth about 1/4 - 1/2 cup of each for more sopping juice.Added about 5 potatoes cut up and a bag of baby carrots. Cooked 4 hours on high and heated up a loaf of French Baguette for sopping up the gravy. Already want to make it again for my 4 brothers, Thanks Again for the recipe. Tom

Can I substitute a vegan butter for regular butter? I have a new member in my house that can’t have dairy. Btw, I love this recipe but don’t want to mess it up because of the butter thing

It should be okay, I haven't tried it yet, make sure to let me know how it comes out. I would check the packets to make sure that they are dairy-free as well.

Good luck!
