This homemade Chinese Donut recipe is exactly like what you get from the Chinese buffet dessert table. It’s made from scratch, and these tasty treats can be made in a snap!
Why These Donuts Are So Popular
These donuts are so delicious! I mean, who doesn’t love a delightful donut? My family loves those Chinese Buffets! I can always get them to go shopping with me if I mention we’re going for a Chinese buffet. They are also crazy about those Chinese Donuts.
It’s pure decadence. Hubs and I discovered a way to make them even more indulgent. They happen to taste fabulous with ice cream!
Chinese Donuts Made From Scratch
This recipe takes a biscuit dough variation and deep-fries them, finishing with a generous sugar coating. All the recipes I found online for homemade Chinese donuts use pre-made refrigerated tubes of biscuit dough. I wanted a homemade from-scratch version. I’m thrilled with what I came up with!

The exterior crunch is marvelous. The inside is soft, tender, and fluffy. It is like a cross between a biscuit and a doughnut.
A quick recipe note: Make sure that the donuts are cooked all the way through before coating them with sugar. Use a cake tester or toothpick to check. During my last little batch of frying donuts, the oil dropped in temperature without my noticing. Those ended up a little doughy in the middle.
Here are the steps to making these delicious donuts
Use both hands to work it into a nice large ball. Do not flour the surface.
Take the total weight of your dough and divide by twelve.
Cut the dough into small chunks, and divide your weight by twelve. Work it in a circular motion between the flat work surface and the palm of your hand. Continue until each donut is rolled and compacted. If you use flour here, use a tiny amount on your hands.
Place the frying oil in a small pot. Heat it to 350 degrees. This is approximately between 2 and 3 on the stove. It’s best to have a deep-frying thermometer that will read the oil’s temperature. Fry no more than two donuts at a time to not crowd the pan.
When the donuts are golden brown, remove them from the oil. Place them on a baking rack to cool slightly. The total cooking time for your donuts is about 4 minutes.
Before completely cooling the donuts, roll them in two cups of sugar and set them back on the rack.
Chinese Donuts
Chinese buffets are known for their standard set of dishes. You will always see Wonton Soup, Pineapple Fried Rice, Chicken Fried Rice, and Asian and Pineapple Ribs. For some reason, often by the fried wontons, you will find these donuts. These donuts are delicious and very easy to make.
How long do Chinese Donuts last?
They are fresh and taste best the day they are made. This recipe makes 12 to 15 donuts.
HELPFUL TOOLS
- Cookie scoops are the perfect tool for dropping the dough into the oil… plus they’re great for cookies and meatballs!
- Piping tip: I love using this tip. It can fill the donuts with raspberry sauce. You can use a piping bag or regular ziplock for this.
- Cooling rack – This is great for placing the donuts to cool after you have fried them. It lifts them off the counter so they don’t get soggy on the bottom.
- Wire Spider – the BEST tool for removing fried foods from the hot oil!

Chinese Donuts
Chinese Donuts, just like what you will find at the Chinese buffet tables, are so easy to make at home and sweet treat for brunch or anytime.

Add lukewarm milk to a mixing bowl and sprinkle your yeast on top.
In 5 minutes bubbles will start to form on the surface.
Once this happens add your eggs, 2 teaspoons sugar, salt, flour, and butter.
Ina bowl of a stand mixer with dough hook knead the ingredients for 10 minutes or until they form a smooth, tacky dough that pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
If your dough is too wet, add flour 1 teaspoon at a time until it is the proper consistency.
Turn the dough onto a flat surface.
Use both hands to work it into a nice large ball. Do not flour surface.
Once you formed a ball, place it in a lightly greased bowl with olive oil and cover it with plastic wrap.
Let the dough rest for an hour and a half until the ball has doubled in size.
Take the total weight of your dough and divide by twelve.
You will yield 12 to 15 donuts.
Cut the dough into small chunks the weight of your divided by twelve. Work it in a circular motion between the flat work surface and the palm of your hand until each donut is rolled and compact. If you do use flour here use a very tiny amount on your hands.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set all the donuts on it. Cover and let the dough rise again until doubled in size about one hour.
Place the frying oil into an small pot and heat it to 350 degrees approximately between a 2 and 3 on the stove. It's best to have a deep frying thermometer that will read the temperature of the oil. Fry no more than two donuts at a time not to crowd the pan.
Remove the donuts from the oil when they a golden brown in color. Place them on a baking rack to cool slightly. The total cook time for your donuts is about 4 minutes.
Before the donuts are completely cooled roll them in the two cups of sugar and set back on the rack.
