Learn how to make Everything Bagels at home!

It’s crazy how the taste of something can send you back.  Growing up there used to be a bagel shop not far from our house.  I went to a before school program, which means we had to wake up super early.

But fresh, warm bagels were always on the way. When we moved to a new town, we moved into an amazing new home, but I missed my morning routine of the bagel shop!  Our new town didn’t even have a bagel shop.

My mom would buy bagels from the grocery store, but they just weren’t the same. They didn’t have the chewiness on the outside and the softness on the inside.  They didn’t have the freshness. And they didn’t have the smells.

One taste of these homemade everything bagels though and it all comes flooding back.  Seriously, there isn’t any better way to start your day other than a homemade bagel! I will warn you, once you try a homemade bagel it is really hard to go back to store bought bagels.

In a bowl, pour in warm water, yeast, and sugar.

Allow it to sit, unstirred, for about 5 minutes until it is foamy. Mix together.

In a second bowl, combine flour and salt.  Make a well in the center and pour the water/yeast mixture.

Mix together.  If needed, add a small amount of water.

Knead for about 10 minutes or until dough is elastic and smooth.

Brush with oil and place in a bowl in a warm place.  Cover and let rise for 1 hour. Punch the dough and let rise for 10 minutes more. Divide into 8-10 balls.

In the center of the ball, make a hole with your thumb. Place on a greased cookie sheet, cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

Preheat oven to 425.  On the stove, fill a large pot with water and bring to a boil.

Drop the bagel into the boiling water and let sit for 1 minute.  (For extra chewy bagels, sit for 2 minutes) Flip and repeat on the other side.

Place on the baking sheet. Brush the top of the bagels with egg white and sprinkle with Everything But The Bagel Seasoning.

Bake for 20 minutes.

These homemade everything bagels are really, really delicious!  I’m sure they will become a favorite! Feel free to omit the Everything But the Bagel seasoning for a plain bagel or add chocolate chips, brush with cinnamon sugar, sesame seeds or whatever else your heart desires.  This homemade everything bagel recipe is truly the only recipe that you will need!

1 tablespoon garlic flake

2 tablespoons sesame seeds

2 tablespoons poppy seeds

Combine all of the seasonings in a small bowl.

A few tips before making this homemade everything bagel recipe:

  • This recipe makes 8 large homemade bagels, but you can always double it and freeze any extras.  When you are ready, just let them thaw and enjoy.

  • You don’t HAVE to have a mixer.  You CAN knead it by hand – which I did this time, but a mixer makes it much, much easier.  If you double the recipe, then a mixer will really make it easier to knead!

  • Trader Joe’s Everything But The Bagel seasoning is a staple in our house.  We put it on veggies, toast, over chicken….bagels….. It’s really delicious.  If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s near you, then you can always get it on Amazon.
