Most Commonly Asked Questions

Can These Mummy Dogs Be Made In Advance?

No, I really don’t recommend making these in advance. They will probably get soggy and are really the best when they are hot-baked out of the oven. They also don’t store or reheat very well.

Although it’s ok to wrap them about an hour ahead, then they will be ready for baking for your kids and guests. I like to wrap mine before my kids get home from school and then just pop them on a baking sheet.

Wrap them tightly with Saran Wrap and placed them back into the fridge. It’s okay to pull them out and baked them about an hour later when I got back home with the kiddos and it worked out perfectly. The kids were thrilled.

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Do you know another reason why I love these Halloween mummy hot dogs? Easy for kids to hold and the bun doesn’t fall apart!

Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind before you get started:

  • What Kind of Dough Should I Use? I used Pillsbury sheets, but any brand is fine and if you can’t find the sheets, just use the regular roll and pinch the seams together.
  • Where Do I Find the Eyes? You can usually find little candy eyes in the sprinkle/frosting section of your local grocery store. Or you can purchase them online from amazon: candy eyes.
  • Add Cheese: You can roll up a piece of American cheese, yellow or white under the crescent dough for some added yumminess. It will melt and the hot dogs will look a little messier, but they are delicious this way!

Best Tips

  • The trick for the best hot dog mummy is to cut small, thin strips of crescent dough and pull it so it’s stretched out and even thinner. Otherwise, it’s a bread item and will puff up.
  • Can also use 2 crescent rolls for 4 hot dogs, so the entire package of crescent roll dough would typically need about16 hot dogs.
  • It takes about 10-15 minutes to cut, roll and assemble all of those Halloween Mummy Hot dogs.
  • If you don’t have a pastry cutter as shown above, simply use a pizza cutter or kitchen scissors to create thin strips.

Mummy Hot Dogs

Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes
Total Time: 10 minutes

Mummy Hot Dogs are so fun to make and especially delicious to eat! Kids love to help make these spooky treats!

Ingredients

  • 1 Package of hot dogs
  • 1 Sheet of refrigerated crescent dough
  • 4 Cheese slices
  • Candy Eyes
  • Decorating Gel
  • Pizza Cutter
  • Baking Pan

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to your crescent dough’s instructions.  Grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper.
  2. Open the refrigerated crescent dough.  If your store has the sheets, you can get those, but if they don’t it is okay.  Just pinch the crescent triangles to form a sheet.
  3. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, cut the dough into long strips.
  4. Cut a slice of cheese in half and place an uncooked hot dog on top.
  5. Take a strip of the dough and wrap it around the hot dog and cheese.
  6. If you are omitting the cheese, you can use less dough but if you are using cheese then you will want to load it up to prevent the cheese from melting and oozing out.
  7. Place on the cookie sheet and bake according to the crescent dough instructions until golden brown.
  8. Let cool.
  9. Once cooled, put a small dot of black decorating gel on the back of a candy eye.  Place on the mummy.
  10. Serve with a dish of ketchup or mustard for dipping.

Notes

Bake the Hot Dogs: Place the crescent-wrapped hot dogs on the prepared baking sheet and place mummy dogs into the oven. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until dough is golden brown.
