Note: This is a summary of the recipe steps. For complete instructions, see the recipe card down below.

STEP 1: Make the cookie cake batter. In a stand mixer or using a handheld mixer, cream together the butter and sugars before adding the eggs and vanilla.
STEP 2: Combine the dry ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, salt, and baking soda.
STEP 3: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Slowly add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients and mix until all the flour mixture is incorporated.
STEP 4: Add chocolate chips and M&Ms. Using a spatula, fold in the chips and candy to the cookie dough batter.
STEP 5: Bake. In a prepared pan, evenly press in the cookie dough batter and bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown. Remove and let it cool completely before frosting it.
STEP 6: Make the frosting. Cream the butter until smooth and then slowly add in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Mix until well combined.
STEP 7: Decorate the cookie cake. Add the frosting to a piping bag with a 1M star tip and pipe the frosting around the edge of the cookie cake. Sprinkle with the 4th of July sprinkles.

4th of July Cookie Cake

A cookie cake is part cookie dough and part cake batter that’s spread into a large cake pan and baked. It comes out as a single-layer large-scale cookie that you slice into wedges. It’s your favorite cookie, just a little thicker and super-sized!

What Size Pan Do I Use?

Traditional cake pans are usually 8 or 9 inches but because this is a super-sized cookie, you’ll need to use a 10-inch cake pan or springform pan. You can also use a sheet pan or 9 x 13 pan, but you may need to reduce the baking time by a few minutes since the dough will be spread more thinly in a larger pan.

Do I Need To Chill The Dough Before Baking?

Good news – no! Just spread it out in the pan and slide it in the oven!

Can I Use Store Bought Frosting?

Absolutely! If you’re short on time or just prefer it, use your favorite brand of store-bought frosting to pipe on the top as decoration.

Pro Tips

  • When baking, if you notice the top of the cookie is browning too much, cover it with foil and continue baking.
  • Be sure and let the cookie cake cool completely before frosting and decorating it.
  • No piping bag? Just add the frosting to a ziplock bag and cut off one of the bottom corners to pipe on dollops of frosting. No need for a fancy tip, especially if you’re adding a smattering of patriotic sprinkles over the top of the frosting and center of the cookie cake!

Variations

  • Chocolate Chips: This recipe calls for semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you could easily substitute white chocolate chips to make it a true red, white, and blue cookie cake.
  • M&M’s: You can use this same recipe but swap out the red and blue M&Ms for other colors related to other seasonal holidays. For example, for Easter, use pastel M&Ms and sprinkles or just follow my easy Easter Cookie Cake recipe. For Valentine’s Day, use red, white, and pink M&Ms and sprinkles. For other special events, use themed colors and personalize the cookie cake, along with the sprinkles and frosting colors (just tint the frosting with food coloring) to make it fit the occasion.

The baked cookie cake, before decorating it, can be cooled completely, wrapped tightly, and frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature before adding frosting and decorating it.
