4th of July Fruit Pizza

With its sugar cookie crust, sweet cream cheese frosting, and red and blue fruity toppings, this 4th of July Fruit Pizza is an easy dessert to help make your patriotic celebration festive and delicious.

Serve this red, white, and blue make-ahead dessert pizza, and watch it disappear in a flash! It’s an easy recipe that the kids can help with, too. The store-bought sugar cookie crust saves you time since you don’t need to mix the dough. A block of softened cream cheese gets a touch of sweetness and vanilla flavor before being slathered on the cooled cookie crust. Fresh blueberries and sliced strawberries decorate the top and make this pizza perfect for holidays such as the 4th of July and Memorial Day.

How To Make 4th of July Fruit Pizza

STEP 1: Bake the cookie crust. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Crumble the prepared sugar cookie dough over a 12-inch pizza pan and press it together to make the crust, leaving about 1 inch of space around the edge of the pan. Bake for 16-20 minutes, until the cookie crust is golden. Allow the cookie crust to cool completely before moving on with the recipe.
STEP 2: Make the frosting. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla and sugar and mix to combine. Spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled cookie crust.
STEP 3: Decorate the top. I like to do a line of blueberries around the outside circle, and moving inward, a circle of strawberries, and another line of blueberries, then a strawberry star with blueberries in the middle.

How Far In Advance Can I Make This Fruit Pizza?

I suggest making it no more than one day ahead of when you’ll serve it. There are a few ways to approach it.

  • You can make, bake and cool the crust the day before and stash it in the fridge overnight until you’re ready to mix together the cream cheese frosting and decorate the top the next day.
  • Or you can bake it and frost the cooled cookie dough, cover it and keep it in the fridge overnight and add the fruit toppings before you serve it.

Note: I think adding the fruit toppings should be done the day of serving so they don’t become soggy by giving off their natural juices while sitting in the fridge.

What Design Should I Use On The Top?

Any design you like! I don’t think I’ve ever added the fruit in the same design twice! Typically, I’ll add the blueberries around the outer edge of the cookie and moving inward, in a circle, add the sliced strawberries, then another circle of blueberries before finishing with a star design in the middle with the sliced strawberries.

To create a flag design on a round pizza, line the outside of the circle with blueberries and make a square in the upper left with blueberries where the stars would go. Fill in the remainder of the cookie by creating red stripes with sliced strawberries, letting the white cream cheese frosting show through between the red stripes.

Topping Variations

Frosting – while I love the sweet tanginess of the cream cheese frosting, you can use even less effort and frost it with a store-bought prepared vanilla frosting instead.

Fruit – change up the fruit as the seasons change or for other holidays and occasions. Make it burst with color with lots of different fruits or just choose two or three and make a beautiful design on top. Here are fruits that work well as toppings:

  • Fresh berries such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries
  • Grapes
  • Kiwi
  • Pineapple wedges or slices
  • Oranges and mandarin slices or sections
  • Cherries, pitted and sliced in half
  • Banana slices (squeeze lemon juice on them to keep them from browning)
  • Apple slices (squeeze lemon juice on them to keep them from browning)
  • Peach slices (squeeze lemon juice on them to keep them from browning)
