Hot Cocoa Bombs
Filled with cocoa mix and marshmallows, these hot cocoa bombs are an adorable way to make a mug of cozy hot chocolate. Kids as well as adults love the chocolate explosion of deliciousness that magically turns into everyone’s favorite warm beverage.
Part craft, part food, and all fun, these hot cocoa bombs make a great project for the holidays, parties, or for gift-giving, whatever the occasion. These little chocolate orbs are an easy food craft that requires just a few ingredients and an inexpensive silicone mold to help shape the end result.
Don’t worry – all the instructions are right here and you don’t need prior experience with food crafting! You’ll be making these awesome cocoa treats in no time at all and thinking up delicious alternatives to add inside and fun ways to decorate them.
But hold on! I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start with the basics first.
What is a hot cocoa bomb?
A hot cocoa bomb is a delicious orb of chocolate goodness that’s filled with marshmallows and cocoa mix. To make hot chocolate with a cocoa bomb, just add one to a mug and pour hot (not scalding!) milk over it, and watch it magically burst open. As it melts from the warm milk, the bomb releases the hidden cocoa mix and marshmallows. It’s a fun way to make hot cocoa! Grab a spoon and stir it all together and enjoy.
How to decorate hot cocoa bombs
This recipe provides a super easy and pretty way to give the cocoa bombs a little razzle-dazzle. You’ll just drizzle melted chocolate on the outside of the finished cocoa bombs and garnish with sprinkles. Lovely!
But if you can’t help yourself and need more variety, or are making them for a specific themed event, then here are a few ideas to make those cocoa bombs stand out and be noticed!
- Use colored candy melts for the outer drizzle. Think white, blue, green, pink, red, etc.
- Add colored sugar sprinkles on top of the chocolate drizzle, or use colored jimmies or nonpareils
- Try adding finely crushed peppermint candies to the top of the chocolate drizzle. That would add a minty flavor to your hot cocoa!
Gift-giving tips
Cellophane bags are always in style and allow the recipient to see your delicious cocoa treats! Just tie them off with a pretty ribbon. You might want to add a little card explaining how to use them, too.
Up your gift-giving by adding a mug along with the cellophane bag full of cocoa bombs. Whether a Santa mug for the holidays or a sweetheart mug for Valentine’s day, your recipient will love the thoughtful touch.
Other flavor ideas for the inside of the cocoa bomb
Other than cocoa mix and marshmallows that you’ll include in the inside of the chocolate bomb, here are some other delicious ideas to add inside:
- instant coffee granules
- crushed peppermint candy flakes
- toffee bits
- slivered almonds
- chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, cinnamon chips
General tips for making hot cocoa bombs
- As with any recipe, read through all the instructions first so there won’t be any surprises.
- Don’t overheat and scorch the chocolate when melting. Melt slowly and in shorter bursts in the microwave.
- Make sure you allow for the chocolate to harden completely (both times) in the freezer before removing it from the mold.
How to store your hot cocoa bombs
Keep your finished hot cocoa bombs in an airtight container in a cool area of your kitchen or pantry.

- Place the silicone molds into the freezer for 2-3 minutes and remove them.
- Add a second layer of melted chocolate to the half circle’s molds, especially on the edges.
- Freeze again for another minute and remove.
- Carefully stretch the silicone molds to remove the half circles.
- Turn the mold upside down and place the rounded sides in between the molds as a stand while filling.
- Add 1 tablespoon of hot cocoa powder to the one side, about 5 mini marshmallows, and some sprinkles.
- Reheat the chocolate if it has hardened and simply add 4 tablespoons to a decorating bag.
- Cut a small tip off the decorating bag and frost the edge of one half chocolate circle. Carefully and quickly add an empty chocolate circle on top to make a sphere and hold it in place for 15 seconds or until the chocolate has acted like glue and hardened.
- Place onto a plate and drizzle melted chocolate on top with the decorating bag and quickly top with sprinkles.
- Let the chocolate harden and place in a glass of warm/hot milk, stir, and watch the bomb melt to see what’s inside, or place in an empty glass and pour hot milk on top of the bomb, watching it melt, and then stir.
You’ll love making these hot cocoa bombs and the kids will enjoy helping, too! Make sure you have your mugs, milk, and spoons ready to go so that everyone can enjoy these cute chocolate explosions as soon as they’re assembled.
