Tips for making Christmas Caramel Marshmallow Rice Krispies Balls

  • Make sure you use fresh large marshmallows for this recipe. You want them to be soft!
  • Don’t overheat the caramel mixture in the microwave. You want it to be warm and melted, but not bubbling and scalded. The caramel mixture is thicker and sticks better to the marshmallows if it’s just warmly melted.
  • Definitely use a wooden skewer to help with dipping the marshmallows in the caramel and rolling in the Rice Krispies. This will keep your fingers from getting sticky!
  • It’s optional to pull the skewer out when you’ve completed rolling the marshmallows, but consider leaving it so it becomes a mess-free way to eat these sweet treats!
  • Do not attempt to store these. They are definitely not freezable. They really should be eaten the same day. If you try to cover them and store in the refrigerator, the rice Krispies become soft and soggy and, well, not so crispy.

Variations on a theme

You can use this same recipe by switching out the flavors of Rice Krispie cereal. For example, try the cocoa rice Krispie cereal for a chocolate flavor. or the frosted rice Krispie cereal for a delicious change. During holidays, like Christmas, you can find the seasonal versions in the stores, so grab a few boxes so you can have them on hand!

You can also add food coloring to the cereal to make it work for various holidays, such as green for St. Patrick’s day, red for Valentine’s Day, pink, yellow, and blue for Easter, and so on.

If you love traditional rice Krispies treats, you have to try these Christmas Caramel Marshmallow Rice Krispies Balls this holiday season. They’re not complicated, but they are unbelievably addicting and will be a festive addition to your holiday snacks.
