Cheesy Garlic Bread
Slathered with a homemade herbed garlic butter spread and garnished with two kinds of cheese, French bread gets toasted to savory perfection with this irresistible cheesy garlic bread recipe.
Calling all garlic lovers, cheese connoisseurs, and bread addicts: here’s the recipe you’ve been waiting for. It’s a trifecta of your favorites, all in one appetizing recipe guaranteed to make you swoon!
This cheesy garlic bread recipe is what you’ll reach for when you need to round out that awesome Italian meal that you’ve just made. You’ll make it when you’re serving that perfectly grilled steak and baked potato. It will be awesome with that bowl of chili. You’ll serve it as an appetizer with a side of marinara dipping sauce. It’s destined to become your go-to way to make garlic bread, no matter what the occasion!
What is the best bread to use for this recipe?
This recipe calls for French bread, which is always a solid choice as its crumb is perfect for holding the buttery spread and absorbing all the flavors while it toasts. Make sure that the bread is not super fresh and doughy, as that texture won’t work as well with the butter and oil spread. You need the bread to be a little hard and dense, so day-old bread will work better. There are other breads that are equally tasty, too. You might try:
- Sourdough
- Ciabatta
- Focaccia
- And in a pinch, sandwich bread!
I would stay away from darker bread like rye or pumpernickel as those bread have a strong flavor that doesn’t work as well with this recipe.
Can I use pre-minced garlic?
This recipe calls for fresh garlic, which is always recommended so that you can experience that amazing flavor that makes this bread so delicious! That said, if you prefer the store-bought pre-minced, you can certainly use that although the flavor won’t be as bold.
What other herbs can I use?
This recipe suggests parsley, but if you don’t have that on hand, rosemary is an awesome herb to use. Oregano is great, too, or a mix of both. If you don’t keep fresh herbs on hand, feel free to use the dried versions.
Cheese tips
For the best and most savory results, I recommend using freshly grated parmesan cheese. There’s really no taste comparison between the processed cheese that comes in the green canister (you know the one!) and a block of cheese that you’ve grated yourself. That said, in most grocery stores’ cheese section, you can find pre-grated (not processed) parmesan cheese. This is totally acceptable if you don’t want to grate the cheese yourself. Same for the mozzarella cheese – if you can find a block of mozzarella to shred yourself, that would be the way to go.
How do I store leftover garlic bread?
Any leftover garlic bread should be wrapped tightly in foil and will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350 degrees F, wrapped in foil, for 7-10 minutes or until heated through.
Ingredients
1 loaf day-old French bread
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh garlic, minced
½ teaspoon of sea salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon finely chopped parsley|
½ cup finely shredded parmesan cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella, optional
Directions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
- Slice bread in half lengthwise using a serrated knife. Place on a baking sheet with the cut-side up.
- In a food processor, cut together butter, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, and parsley until completely blended. Spread over cut side of french bread.
- Sprinkle an even layer of cheese over butter.
- Place in oven and bake for 10 minutes or until the edges of the bread are crisp and the cheese has melted.
- Remove from oven, slice, and serve warm.
This easy cheesy garlic bread recipe is a warm, buttery, and savory way to enjoy a family-favorite side item that’s always welcomed and quickly devoured at the dinner table.

I have made this with just Parmesan and with a combination of Parmesan and Mozzarella. Both are amazing but the mozzarella makes it a super cheesy, cheesy garlic bread. Yum!

Fantastic. Made this with a ciabatta loaf and bumped up the garlic (cause I love love love garlic). Easy, delicious, and I didn’t want to share.
