Instructions

  1. Using a 1A round piping tip, pipe icing on the cupcakes in a circular pattern, moving towards the center to create a peak.
  2. Top the cupcakes with bee icing decorations.

Can I Use A Different Flavor Of Cake Mix?

Yes. Swap out the chocolate for almost any flavor or color, such as white, yellow, or lemon. Those will all pair beautifully with the yellow frosting.

Can I Use Store-Bought Cupcakes?

Absolutely. Did you know that you can ask for unfrosted cupcakes at the bakery section of your local grocery store? Just place your order in advance so that they will be prepared for you upon your arrival!

Can I Use A Different Color Frosting?

Sure. Although the bright yellow frosting on the chocolate cupcakes evokes the classic yellow-and-black of bees, you can swap out the frosting color. White and/or vanilla frosting is a neutral that will work with any cupcake flavor. Keep in mind that the bumblebee decorations will drive home the theme of cupcakes, no matter the frosting choice.

Can I Use A Different Decoration?

Of course. Staying with the beehive theme, the bumble bees can be replaced with cupcake topper picks that feature bees, beehives, and honeycomb. You can also use this array of honeycomb sprinkles to decorate the top of the frosting.

How To Frost The Cupcakes Without A Piping Bag And Tip

While this recipe calls for a piping bag and a 1A round piping tip, you can also use this method for frosting a cupcake without those tools. Fill a gallon-size Ziploc bag with the frosting, leaving plenty of room to squeeze it into one corner. Cut off the corner, and work in a circular motion over the cupcake. Squeeze the icing around the outside periphery of the cupcake top, building layers as you circle up and around toward the inside of the top. You should be left with a tall, peaked stack of icing.

Storage

Store cupcakes on the countertop in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
