Serve this colorful layered Irish Coffee Cocktail for St. Patrick’s Day and impress your family and friends with your artistic bartender skills. It’s easy to create this stacked look with Irish cream, coffee, and whisky that’s been tinted green.
This eye-catching dessert cocktail is perfect for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day! It’s a fun way to add green to the classic Baileys Irish coffee drink and give it a festive look in a clear glass. The secret is using a cocktail layering tool that makes it easy to achieve as you pour each liquid into the glass. How easy is that? Up your Irish Coffee game with this creative cocktail!
Ingredients Needed
Irish Cream Flavored Syrup – I use the Torani syrup that helps boost the flavor of the cocktail.
Baileys Irish Cream – use the classic flavor.
Coffee – brewed, Use your favorite brand.
Clear Whisky – use moonshine whisky or any clear brand. Be sure and use clear because you’ll be adding food coloring to it to tint it green for the layered drink.
Green Food Coloring – used to tint the clear whisky.
Whipped Cream – optional but it adds a festive topping to the finished drink.
Drink Layering Tool – use this layer tool which is essential for helping you create the stacked look.
How To Make The Irish Coffee Cocktail
STEP 1: Begin by pouring the flavored syrup into the bottom of the glass.
STEP 2: Place the layering tool on top of the glass (do not remove until all layers have been poured) and slowly pour the Baileys Irish Cream through, letting it gradually form a layer above the syrup.
STEP 3: Next, slowly pour the coffee into the layering tool cup and allow the coffee to settle on top of the cream. Wait one minute for the coffee to seep into the cream and slightly settle above the cream.
STEP 4: Add 1 drop of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of clear whisky and stir. Then, slowly pour the green layer of whisky over the cream and coffee layer.
STEP 5: Remove the layering tool. Add whipped cream (optional) to the top of the layered drink. Stir to combine all the layers of the cocktail when ready to drink.
Variations
While I use the original Baileys Irish Cream with its classic flavor, you can swap out the original for the espresso creme flavor, which is just a more intense coffee flavor with a hint of chocolate. You can also try the Baileys vanilla mint version of Irish Cream.
How Do I Make The Green Layer?
In a separate small glass from the one you’re using to make the cocktail, combine the clear whisky with 1 drop of green food coloring and stir. Set aside until ready to use to make the drink.
How Do I Pour The Layers?
You’ll need this layering tool to create this cocktail. First, practice! Don’t wait until your party to make this drink. Go ahead and practice a few times to get a feel for how to pour the layers using the tool. You’ll be pouring slowly to give the liquids time to settle on top of each other to create the stacked look, so it’s worth a few practice sessions to get it just right.
- Layer 1: First, pour the Irish cream-flavored syrup into the glass and then place the layering tool on top of the glass. You’ll leave the layering tool there for the remainder of the layers.
- Layer 2: Slowly pour the Baileys Irish Cream through the layering tool and watch as it slowly sinks to float on top of the syrup layer.
- Layer 3: Slowly pour the brewed coffee through the layering tool so that it gradually forms a layer on top of the cream. Wait at least one minute for it to seep into the cream before continuing with the next layer.
- Layer 4: In a separate glass, make the green layer by adding 1 drop of green food coloring to 1/4 cup of clear whisky and stir to combine. Now pour the green whisky slowly through the layering tool so that it settles to form the top layer of the drink.
- Layer 5: Remove the layering tool. Add a squirt of whipped cream to the top of the drink (optional).
Note: Admire the drink layers and then be sure and stir the drink to combine all the layers and ingredients before enjoying.
Can I Change The Order Of The Layers?
Sadly, no. When pouring layered drinks, the overarching rule is that the heaviest ingredients go in first. Gravity will always win in this one! So, the heaviest ingredients first, such as creams, and the lightest liquids on top, such as the whisky.
Storage
This cocktail is best made, individually, and served and enjoyed immediately.
