I don’t know about you, but I love peppermint patties! Remember when they started offering York peppermint patties in that giant, big-as-a-cookie size? Oh my goodness! With this no-bake recipe, I can recreate those minty delights right at home and make the patties as small or as large as I want.
Peppermint is often associated with the holidays, but don’t wait to make these chocolate-coated peppermint candies – you only need 4 ingredients to make them! Once you see how simple they are to make, you’ll find all sorts of occasions to whip up a batch and enjoy them.
They’re perfect for dessert tables, after-dinner mints, tucked inside a special someone’s lunch box, co-worker break room treats, or packaged as gifts for friends and neighbors.
Ingredients Needed
Sweetened Condensed Milk – Used to help create the creamy centers of the peppermint patties.
Peppermint Extract – This is what flavors the sweet centers with that iconic cool and minty taste.
Powdered Sugar – Helps make up the sweet softness of the minty centers.
Chocolate Almond Bark – You’ll dip peppermint centers in melted chocolate using almond bark. Use milk chocolate or dark chocolate for a classic look and flavor.
Sprinkles – Although optional, I love adding them, especially during the holidays to give them a little festive touch.
How To Make Peppermint Patties
Note: This is a summary of the recipe steps. For complete instructions, see the recipe card down below.
- Mix together the mint centers using sweetened condensed milk, peppermint extract, and powdered sugar. The dough should be stiff but not sticky.
- Roll the dough into balls and place them on a parchment-lined tray. Flatten each ball into a patty.
- Place the tray into the freezer for an hour to let the patties firm up.
- When you’re ready to dip, melt the almond bark in 30-second intervals in the microwave until melted and smooth.
- Working quickly, dip the peppermint patties, one at a time, into the chocolate and place them back on parchment paper.
- Decorate with sprinkles, if desired.
- Let harden before serving. Keep refrigerated for best results.
Peppermint Patty Variations
It’s hard to improve on a classic, but just in case you want to change up flavors, and colors or make them uniquely customized to fit a specific occasion, here are some ideas.
Flavors
While peppermint extract is the classic flavor for that creamy and sweet inside filling, you can swap it out for orange, almond, or vanilla extract for a completely different taste.
Inner Color
The confectioner’s sugar and sweetened condensed milk creamy filling can be tinted with food coloring for a festive surprise when you bite into it. For example, green for Christmas or St. Patrick’s day, or pastel yellow, pink or blue for spring or summer events or parties. I like to use gel food coloring.
Garnishes
- Sprinkles – This recipe calls for sprinkles, so choose the sprinkles you like or that fit the theme or occasion. You have so many choices with sprinkles.
- Drizzle – However, if you’re not into sprinkles, consider drizzling melted white or dark chocolate in a zig-zag over the patties. You can’t go wrong with more chocolate!
- Crushed Candy – And don’t forget crushed candy, like peppermints, that will add even more minty flavor to these chocolate-covered treats!
Chocolate Coating
White this recipe uses chocolate almond bark for coating the frozen peppermint patties, you have other options, too.
- Chocolate Candy Melts – these come in a variety of choices such as dark, medium, or white chocolate or even other colors for a truly creative peppermint patty.
- Chocolate Chips With Coconut Oil – you can always melt chocolate chips with a little coconut oil for coating. Be aware that the result won’t be as thick of a coating as the candy melts or almond bark.
How To Dip The Peppermint Patties In Chocolate
The easiest way to cover the peppermint patties in melted chocolate almond bark is to use the spoon, fork, and toothpick method.
Once you’ve melted your chocolate and it’s still warm, use your fingers to pick up the frozen peppermint patty and drop it in the chocolate.
- Use a spoon to spoon the chocolate over the patty to make sure it’s completely coated.
- Use a fork to scoop underneath the patty and lift it out of the chocolate. Hold it over the melted chocolate to let any excess drip back into the bowl. You can also gently tap the fork on the side of your bowl and then gently scrape the bottom of the fork on the side of the bowl to remove any remaining chocolate, being careful not to let the patty fall back into the bowl.
- Use a toothpick to help push the chocolate-covered peppermint patty back onto the parchment paper to keep the smooth chocolate covering intact and free of fingerprints.
- Add any garnishes now so they’ll stick before the chocolate coating hardens.
Storage
Store the peppermint patties in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 2 months.
If freezing in stacks, separate each pattie with a square of wax paper. Thaw in the fridge or on the countertop before serving.
