French Silk Brownies are the ultimate dessert indulgence for chocolate lovers. They have a rich, fudgy brownie base topped with a silky smooth chocolate filling. A fluffy layer of whipped cream crowns it, and a dash of chocolate shavings adds the finishing touch. These irresistible brownies are guaranteed to become a favorite.

French Silk Brownies are what you get when you can’t choose between brownies and a chocolate pie! The layers come together beautifully to make a sweet treat that’s great for parties, potlucks, or just a special weeknight dessert. The best part? This recipe is really easy to prepare! It starts with a boxed brownie mix, then you whip up a fluffy chocolate filling that comes together effortlessly. A simple layer of Cool Whip goes on top, and chocolate shavings give it that final touch.

- No complicated steps, knowledge, or equipment needed
- Is customizable
- Has an irresistible chocolate flavor throughout
Ingredients
For The Brownies
Box of Brownie Mix – use your favorite brand. You’ll also need the other ingredients listed on the back of the box to make the brownies. Mine called for an egg, water, and melted butter.
For The French Silk Layer
Cream Cheese – softened, so that it mixes without clumps. Provides creaminess.
Vanilla Extract – provides flavor.
Powdered Sugar – provides sweetness and texture.
Semi-Sweet Chocolate Bar – use a baker’s bar. Don’t use chocolate chips since they won’t melt properly or provide the best smoothness.
Unsalted Butter – for creaminess and flavor.
Cool Whip – provides an airy, light texture to the filling.
Chocolate Syrup – adds additional depth of chocolate flavor to the filling.
For The Topping
Cool Whip – adds a fluffy, sweet top layer to the brownies.
Chocolate Shavings – to garnish the top layer.

Directions
- Preheat the oven to 350°. Grease a 9×13 baking dish with cooking spray.
- In a medium-sized bowl, prepare the brownies according to the box. My box called for 1 egg, 1/3 cup of water, and 1/2 cup of melted butter.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes. Check with a fork or toothpick to see if the brownies are done. Let the brownies cool completely before starting the next step.
- In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and vanilla, then add the powdered sugar and chocolate syrup.
- In a small microwave-safe bowl, break apart 1 chocolate bar and add 1/4 cup of butter. Microwave for 30 seconds, stirring every 10 seconds. (It may need more time)
- Pour the chocolate mixture into the cream cheese mixture and beat again.
- With a rubber spoon, fold in the Cool Whip to the mixture; do not stir, or it won’t be fluffy anymore.
- Spread the topping over the cooled brownies and pop them in the fridge for 25-40 minutes.
- Once out of the fridge, spread the other container of Cool Whip over the top of the French silk layer and sprinkle with chocolate shavings. You can use a potato peeler to make shavings with the other chocolate bar.
- Place back into the fridge until ready to serve!

Brownie Variations
For the brownie layer, add espresso powder for a rich and deeper flavor. You could also add chopped walnuts or pecans for crunch. For the silk layer, consider stirring in peanut butter or Nutella for a nutty flavor profile.

Garnish Variations
Here, I’ve used chocolate shavings for an irresistible garnish. Try these other ideas for something equally appealing:
- Mini chocolate chips
- Dusting of cocoa powder
- Drizzle of chocolate or caramel sauce
- Drizzle of melted peanut butter
- Crushed Oreos or cookie crumbs
- Chopped nuts
- Toffee bits
How To Serve
Want to bake and serve your brownies in a unique way? Make them in a round springform pan! This allows you to slice and serve them just like a pie. It’s a great idea for parties to make the presentation feel a little bit fancier. If you want to take it up a notch, add a scoop of vanilla ice cream when serving. So good!

Beverage Pairings
Coffee, milk, and dessert wines all pair wonderfully with French Silk Brownies. Try my tasty St. Patrick’s Day Irish Coffee, my comforting Slow Cooker Pumpkin Spice Latte, or my cozy Baileys Hot Chocolate.
Storage
Store the brownies in the refrigerator, tightly covered or in an airtight container, for 4-5 days. You can also freeze the brownies for up to 2 months in an airtight container. Thaw in the fridge before serving.
