This Nutella® Hazelnut Wreath recipe is an impressive treat that’s perfect for any brunch, celebration, or holiday gathering. It’s a stunning, sweet, chocolate, and nutty bread for friends and family to indulge in.
If you love the combination of chocolate and hazelnuts, then using that irresistible ingredient known as Nutella within a dessert bread will be a deliciously high priority for your next baking project. And you’re going to love how easy it is to make this fabulous braided wreath!
Don’t let words like braided and wreath scare you – it’s actually simple to do and I’ll walk you through the entire process. You’ll be amazed at what you can create with a ball of dough and a jar of spreadable hazelnut and chocolate goodness.
You’ll want to set aside a little time to devote to this Nutella Hazelnut Wreath Bread because there’s an hour rise time for the yeast dough. Aside from that hour, the prep time is just 20 minutes, and this delectable treat bakes in 30 minutes.
There’s really nothing complicated about making the circular wreath. Once you’ve mixed the dough and let it rise, you’ll just roll it out, spread the Nutella and crushed hazelnuts on it, roll it into a log, cut it strategically and braid it (I’ll show you how), form it into a wreath and apply a little egg wash. Then it’s ready for the oven.
Variations For The Filling
Obviously, I’m a huge fan of Nutella and I know that you’ll love this recipe just as it is, but if you want to try other fillings, here are a few that I know will work wonderfully. You’ll follow the recipe but just swap out a different filling where it says to add the Nutella and hazelnuts.
Classic Cinnamon Sugar Filling: Who doesn’t love cinnamon bread? Make this easy filling by spreading the dough with 4 Tablespoons of melted or softened butter and then sprinkling it with a mixture of 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 2 Tablespoons of ground cinnamon.
Your Favorite Jam Or Preserves: From blueberry to raspberry jam or peach to strawberry preserves, this is an easy filling to add to this sweet bread. The only difficult part is deciding which flavor to use!
Pumpkin Filling: Perfect for fall, whisk together this yummy pumpkin spread: 1/2 can of pumpkin puree, 2 Tablespoons of granulated sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of ginger, and 1/4 teaspoon of cloves.
Make-ahead and freeze options
Make-ahead dough: The dough can be made ahead and placed in the refrigerator overnight prior to letting it rise. To proceed with the recipe, take it out of the refrigerator and let it rise until doubled.
Freezing the dough: For freezing options, make the dough, wrap it tightly and freeze for up to 2 months. Prior to use, let it thaw in the refrigerator overnight. Let it rise on the countertop until doubled, and then continue with the recipe.
Storing leftovers: Wrap any leftovers of the baked Nutella Hazelnut Wreath Bread with plastic wrap or in an airtight container. This will keep on the counter for 2-3 days. Personally, I like to keep my leftovers in the refrigerator and take out a piece and reheat it for a few seconds in the microwave to warm it up. So good!
So if you’re a fan of Nutella, you’ll want to make this scrumptious sweet bread as soon as you can procure all the necessary ingredients. But don’t worry! They’re all common pantry ingredients but you want to make sure you have them all on hand before you get started.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- Fast-acting dry yeast
- Whole milk
- Water
- Sugar
- Unsalted butter
- Egg
- Nutella
- Hazelnuts
- Salt
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a large bowl or a bowl of a stand mixer, combine the warm water, milk, sugar, and yeast. Whisk to dissolve the yeast. Leave for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add in the egg and salt. Add one cup of flour and melted butter. Slowly add the remaining flour. Knead the dough with the hook or by hand for 5-8 minutes.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until almost doubled in size, about two hours.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Once the dough has doubled in size, dump it out on a floured work surface. Roll the dough out to a large rectangle. Spread a thin layer of Nutella over the dough, leaving the dough bare around the edges. Sprinkle the chopped hazelnuts over the dough.
- Roll up the dough tightly to form a log. Using a sharp knife, cut the log longwise, leaving the last inch of the dough intact on one end.
- Twist the two strands around themselves, then form a wreath. Pinch ends to seal.
- Carefully transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover the wreath loosely with plastic, then let it stand until soft and nearly doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- Brush the top of the wreath with the egg wash.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
- Sprinkle the cooled wreath with powdered sugar.
