A great side dish and a must-have for summertime. Anything that is grilled tastes better with a side dish of homemade coleslaw. I make this recipe a lot during the summer and it is a family favorite. My friends and family request it when we have BBQs, cookouts, and picnics. It’s really simple to make and tastes amazing.

What will I need to make this Best Coleslaw recipe?
You will need the following ingredients:

- Coleslaw mix: For a little more color in your coleslaw mix, you may want to consider adding an additional ½ cup of red cabbage and carrots to the mix.
- Mayonnaise: If you prefer the taste of miracle whip you can always swap the mayonnaise out for miracle whip. You can also choose to do half and half of each.
- Honey: You will see in many coleslaw recipes that there is an addition of sugar to sweeten things up. I have found that honey is a great substitute for sugar. It adds that touch of sweetness that is needed for the classic coleslaw flavor, but it is not overwhelmingly sweet.
- Buttermilk: You can use store-bought buttermilk or add an additional 1 teaspoon of either lemon juice or white vinegar to your milk (whole or 2%) to sour it before adding it in with the rest of the ingredients. This is a great hack if you don’t have buttermilk on hand.
- Lemon juice: Fresh or concentrated lemon juice will work
- Distilled white vinegar
- Salt & pepper

Do I have to use a store-bought coleslaw mix or can I use fresh vegetables?
I used a store-bought coleslaw mix because it saved a lot of prep time. It is especially great to do this if you are preparing food for a crowd. If you do not have a coleslaw mix available or you are looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can shred your vegetables by hand or with a food processor.
To make 9 servings of coleslaw use half a head of finely shredded green cabbage, ¼ a head of shredded red cabbage (about 2 cups), and two to three grated carrots (about 1 cup).

How long will my coleslaw last?
Your traditional coleslaw will last for two to three additional days in the refrigerator. I recommend only leaving your coleslaw out at room temperature for up to one hour before refrigerating. Do not freeze.
